January 19 Now Is The TimeThere has never been a better time for Boomer up and coming artists to make an impact and a statement to the listening (and buying) public than right now. I think the marketing world is ready for it. I bought a copy of Chaka Khan's new CD "Funk This" and let out a big "Woo-Hoo!" as I looked at the artwork and the way she is presented on this CD! Kudos! Kudos! Kudos! Chaka represents every idea I am trying to express with the way we should be portrayed. What she is doing is perfect! It's so right on the money! She backs up this up with fantastic music and vocals! I couldn't stop listening to the CD!
I use Chaka as an example because she epitomizes the way a Boomer artist should be portrayed in the media. The point I am trying to continually make is the importance of public "perception". We are not over the hill. We do not need to be put out to pasture. We're just getting started, We are vital, alive and very musical. Chaka decided that she still had a lot to offer and made it so with this latest CD (which I also HIGHLY recommend).
There are so many talented Boomer artists who have either been told it's too late, or believe that time has passed them by. If I am talking to you, then please know that neither of these statements are true. You were given a gift that time cannot take away. I know that some would challenge that but I stand by it. There are ways to keep the voice alive and vibrant. It is not a matter of age. It'a a matter of practice. Playing that instrument and perfecting oneself on it keeps that talent fresh and new and those fingers nimble. Yes, I take pills now that I didn't have to twenty years ago...but so what? Is that supposed to be a matter of age? There are people much younger, who through unfortunate circumstances, have to do the same thing. So the idea that once you reach a certain age you are no longer viable or valuable is, pardon me, a bunch of hooey. Life is what you make it and Chaka Khan (along with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis) have chosen to make it work for them. They are bending it to their will, not the other way around. They are making the world take notice and I love it.
So while this is happening, now is the time for up and coming Boomer artists to kick that door down as well. You can do it. We all come from the same timeline and are cut from similar musical molds. We have what it takes...if we choose to believe it. I hope you believe it. September 04 Why I'm HereHi,
My name is Sherelle Cary Smith and I am a Boomer singer/songwriter. I'm here because I truly believe there is a place for emerging baby boomer artists and my desire and goal is to tap into the market that I feel already exists. Every day I speak to artists who are very talented and very hungry, but are not twenty-something. It makes me sad because there should be a market for them and there isn't.
I'm here because I have a love and a heart for music. I believe that music is ageless and timeless and if an artist has the drive and the desire to succeed, he or she should be allowed to do so. There should be a market for them. When I look at the buying power of the Baby Boomer Generation, I have to ask myself why this is not happening. I look at Marketing strategies like those of American Express, Dove Products and Revlon...and I applaud them. I see their success but more than that, I see the possibilities. A Boomer is a person who is vibrant, alive and still full of so much vitality and life. They deserve new and emerging artists to keep that vibrancy going. We can all help each other.
I'm here because I believe in New Boomer Artists, New Boomer Music, New Boomer Marketing, New Boomer Record labels, New Boomer Radio Stations of every genre, and a new belief that a career can actually begin after 30. I'm here to bend the rules, buck the trend, and break the barriers. If you believe the same things, you've come to the right place. From a financial standpoint, there's money to be made here...there are new artists over 30 that are worth your attention. There are marketing strategies, new record labels, new publishing companies, new radio stations waiting to be created. There is an audience out there waiting to listen, waiting to show up for the concerts, waiting to buy the CD's, and most of all, waiting to buy the products of those who support emerging (and exisiting) Boomer Artists.
So in closing, I am here to make a change in the way that society perceives age. A study shows that most Baby Boomers feel 15 years younger than their chronological age. I wrote a song which is the title track of my debut CD called, "Do What You Love". Hopefully, I have an MP3 of it here on this site. If not please go to my website www.sherellecarysmith.com to listen to a clip. If you are a musician who feels your time is over, I hope that this song encourages you and lifts up your hopes and spirits. You can do anything you want to. Remember..."Music is ageless and timeless...and doesn't have an expiration date for creativity!
Keep the music going!!!! |
